Fabric of our Faculty

February 18, 2015

Over the past few weeks, I have had the honor of presenting the Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Faculty Awards to a handful of outstanding members of the Texas Tech University System family. These are the most prestigious awards given to faculty members from each of our institutions who represent excellence in both teaching and research. This was my first time as Chancellor to award these honors, and the honor ended up being all mine.

During my first few months on the job, I visited each of our campuses and learned the unique dynamic of the institutions. As I looked around, one of the first things I noticed was the strength of our faculty. These individuals make significant contributions to our universities and communities, and their unmatched passion is shaping the lives of our students. Now, as I look to the future of our system, it is clear that the talent and dedication of our faculty is key to advancing our universities and furthering our vision for the TTU System.

Faculty are at the heart of what we do here. This year’s award recipients were described by their colleagues as dedicated and effective teachers. Fellow faculty members recalled instances when these individuals went above and beyond for their students and detailed the positive effects of programs and initiatives implemented at their respective institutions.

This year’s award recipients are recognized all over the world for their innovative solutions and new ways of thinking. They serve their communities and beyond by uncovering new knowledge and problem-solving answers with their research.

Our outstanding faculty members are the reason Angelo State has been honored by the Princeton Review as a Best College for six years in a row and why TTUHSC graduates more health care professionals than any other health-related institution in Texas. They are the reason Texas Tech led the nation in Fulbright Scholars in 2013 and why TTUHSC El Paso is making such a heavy impact on the health of the southern border.

We have a lot to be proud of, and to say these achievements deserve recognition is an understatement. The Chancellor’s Council Distinguished Faculty Awards are a token of our appreciation and an incentive that we hope contributes to the fabric of excellence that is already in place.

As I stood in the room with this year’s award recipients, previous honorees and those who have supported them throughout their careers, I felt a great sense of pride knowing these leaders are leaving an impact on our students and taking our four universities to the next level. We are in extremely capable hands, and I am proud to have each of these faculty members on our team.

Recruiting top faculty is certainly not the only step to increasing the national profile of the TTU System. Each of our institutions is carving its own nich in the national higher education landscape, and this blog will offer a glimpse into the steps we will take together to reach our goals. And in this process, my hope is that this blog will also be a great way for us to get to know each other along the way.

Yours very truly,

Robert L. Duncan
Chancellor
