Russell H. Thomasson
Russell Thomasson is the Chief of Staff and Counsel to the Chancellor. Thomasson serves as the Chancellor’s primary liaison to the vice chancellors and senior administrators of the component institutions as well as other constituencies throughout the state and region. He also advises the Chancellor on various matters and provides general oversight with regard to legal affairs.
Previously, Thomasson served as Special Assistant and Counsel to the Chancellor where he was responsible for managing initiatives and special projects related to wind energy, facilities construction projects, large and complex procurement contracts, student recruitment programs and other system-level issues.
Prior to joining the Chancellor’s Office, Thomasson practiced law in the Lubbock law firm of Field, Manning, Stone, Hawthorne & Aycock, P.C. and, prior to that, the Dallas law firm of Cowles & Thompson, P.C. In these roles, he practiced in the areas of general and commercial litigation, real estate, estate planning, guardianship and business transactional law. He also served as Assistant District Attorney for a brief period in the Lubbock County District Attorney’s Office.
Thomasson grew up in Lubbock and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1998, receiving a BBA in Accounting and serving as president of the student body. He received his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 2001.
He is a member of the Lubbock County Young Lawyers Association and has served on the board of directors for the Texas Young Lawyers Association. He is also a member of Melonie Park Church in Lubbock.
