IBM Mainframe
The center of the Texas
Tech University administrative computing environment is an IBM 2066-002
mainframe. The IBM mainframe contains 2 CMOS processors capable of 350 MIPS
(Millions of Instructions Per Second) combined and 16GB of RAM. The mainframe is supported by over 2.1TB of DASD
(Direct Access Storage Device) delivered by an EMC Symmetrix Storage Area Network (SAN), and 4 IBM 3480 Cartridge Tape Drives. More
information about the mainframe and related products can
be found at IBM's System 390 homepage.
Additional
hardware includes the IBM 3494 Magstar Tape Library. Technology Operations and System
Management has a two frame unit (a four frame unit is pictured) capable of
storing approximately 400 cartridge tapes. The tapes hold 10 gigabytes of data
uncompressed and 30 gigabytes or data compressed, depending on the
characteristics of the data. A maximum of 265 tape exchanges can be performed
per hour, with an average mount time of seven seconds.
