Resolution of the Board of Regents Honoring Coach Mike Leach

WHEREAS, The Board of Regents of the Texas Tech University System is proud to recognize Red Raider head football coach Mike Leach for his many accomplishments since his arrival at Texas Tech University in December 1999; and

WHEREAS, Coach Leach has led the Texas Tech football program to 48 victories in his first six seasons, is the only head coach in school history to lead his first six teams to bowl games, and his 48 wins are the most in a Texas Tech head football coach’s first six seasons; and

WHEREAS, Mike Leach’s winning record, combined with his teams having consistently led the nation in passing offense and total offense, have generated tremendous excitement both on the playing field and among Red Raider fans far and wide; and

WHEREAS, Although Coach Leach’s leadership has produced record-setting results in athletic competition, his presence extends throughout the team in many positive ways and has been particularly beneficial for the academic performance of his student-athletes; and

WHEREAS, Since he became the Red Raiders head football coach, the Texas Tech football program has placed 108 student-athletes on the Academic All Big XII Football team, more than any other school except Nebraska; and

WHEREAS, For six consecutive years, Mike Leach’s program has been recognized by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) as one of the nation’s top academic performers for consistently having a graduation rate at or above 70 percent; and

WHEREAS, The Red Raider program’s 80 percent graduation rate in 2006 made it one of only 29 football programs in all of Division I-A to receive the AFCA’s top graduation rate recognition this year; and

WHEREAS, Prior to 2001, the Texas Tech football program had never made the list of top graduation rate programs since this AFCA recognition was established in 1981; and

WHEREAS, During the past six years, Texas Tech and Nebraska are the only Big XII football programs to have been recognized by the AFCA each and every year as a top graduation rate program, with the closest any other Big XII football program has come to matching this record being Baylor, which has been so recognized by the AFCA in three of the past six years; and

WHEREAS, Student-athletes in the football program have garnered five of the eight Big XII Community Champion Awards claimed by Texas Tech since Coach Leach’s arrival; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Board of Regents of the Texas Tech University System hereby extends its congratulations and heartfelt appreciation to Coach Mike Leach for his program’s many noteworthy accomplishments in pursuit of academic excellence; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Coach Leach as an expression of high regard from the Board of Regents.
