This afternoon (Feb. 1), Gov. Rick Perry announced his appointments to the Board of Regents for the Texas Tech University System.

Larry Anders of Plano and Debbie Montford of San Antonio each have been re-appointed; John D. Steinmetz of Lubbock has been appointed to replace Regent Dan Serna.  Each of the three appointees will serve a 6-year term that ends Jan. 31, 2017.

“The Texas Tech University System is grateful for the reappointment of Chairman Larry Anders and Regent Debbie Montford and welcomes John Steinmetz to the Board of Regents,” said Kent Hance, Texas Tech University System chancellor.

“I truly believe the continued growth of the Texas Tech University System during these challenging economic conditions will be accomplished through the collective wisdom and guidance of our Board of Regents. John is an exceptional Texas Tech alumnus who has served his community and his alma mater admirably in the past, and I know he will continue to do so as a regent.”

Steinmetz is president of Vista Bank. He has also served as a board member of numerous organizations such as the Texas Lyceum, Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, Young Life of Lubbock, Brazos River Authority and Lubbock County 2010 Census Committee.

Steinmetz received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Texas Tech University in 2002.

While attending Texas Tech, Steinmetz served as president of the Texas Tech University Student Government Association where he founded Texas Tech’s RaiderGate and was co-founder of the Student Red Raider Club. He was also the co-founder of the Young Professionals of Greater Lubbock and is a past president of the Lubbock Boys and Girls Club.

Anders was initially appointed to the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents in March 2005, and Montford was appointed to the board in Dec. 2010.

“I am honored to be reappointed by Governor Perry and look forward to the next six years of service,” said Anders.

“During my time as chairman and a member of the Board of Regents, our universities have seen tremendous growth.  I know with the continued leadership from reappointed Regent Debbie Montford and insight from newly-appointed John Steinmetz, along with the remaining members of the board, we stand poised to guide the Texas Tech University System to a new level of greatness.”

“We have been fortunate to have had Regent Dan Serna serve on the Board of Regents for the past six years, and all of us thank him for his passion and service to the Texas Tech University System.”

Senate confirmation is required for new appointments.
