Man Giving Birds to the Sky
2001
EDWARD POVEY (AMERICAN)
Bronze
School of Medicine/School of Allied Health Building Lobby
The focus of Povey’s work is the human figure: the icon of all
human concerns, reappearing throughout the history of art. The
figure in this sculpture is walking with his head pointed to the
sky, while his hands are held up, releasing birds. For the artist,
this work is a symbol of supreme confidence and vision. The
birds are symbols of generosity and gratitude. The head of the
figure was inspired by the heads painted by Picasso in the 1920s.

DUTCH SCHULZE (AMERICAN)
Steel and Glass
School of Medicine/School of Allied Health Building Lobby
Schulze works in glass because he believes it is the medium that
hosts the most brilliant and richest colors possible. He employs
a color technique that involves layers of different transparent
colors over opaque design patterns. This produces a rich, subtly
complex background upon which he picks up hot twisted cane
and fuses together the layers. The result is the flowing effect
that you see in Commitment. For this piece, he chose to echo
the typical Spanish Renaissance motif of the arches used in the
façade of the building.
