Top Scholars Program

The Top Scholars program was established in the fall of 2007 by Chancellor Kent Hance to help advance recruitment efforts and the overall academic quality of students at Texas Tech University.

Hance personally recruits top high school students by calling them, paying for their travel to Lubbock and organizing first-class tours of campus.

In addition to paying for travel, Hance visits with these top students during their visits to campus and helps facilitate a tour of campus that highlights Texas Tech’s excellent academic programs and student life.

The Top Scholars program is funded by private donations Hance raises through the Chancellor’s Council, and to qualify for the program, students must to be admitted to Texas Tech with a score above a 1500 on their SAT (including only math and critical reading sections).

Chancellor Hance takes time to call hundreds of students throughout the year to recruit them to Texas Tech due to other academic accomplishments and achievements.

In addition, the Texas Tech President calls scholars with SAT scores above 1400 and other administrators call students with SAT scores ranging from 1300 to 1400.
