Blayne Beal, Associate Director/Media Relations, Texas Tech University Athletics

Blayne Beal begins his sixth season at Texas Tech as Associate Director of Media Relations. Beal, a graduate of Texas Tech University, returned to his alma mater in 2000 after serving in the sports information office at the University of Tennessee. He is primarily responsible for the publicity and promotion of Red Raider baseball and assists with football.

Prior to coming to Texas Tech, Beal worked under College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) Hall of Famer Bud Ford at the University of Tennessee as a graduate assistant in the men’s athletics department. While at Tennessee, Beal served as the media contact for the Volunteer baseball and tennis teams.

Since his arrival at Texas Tech, he has claimed two “Best In The Nation” publication honors and three Top Three finishes giving the Texas Tech Media Relations Office its first-ever national publication awards. He just recently served as Press Officer for Team USA Baseball at the 2005 IBAF World Cup in Holland.

While in college, he spent two years in the Tech Media Relations Office as a student assistant where he served as the media contact for softball. During the 1998 college football bowl season, he completed an internship with the FedEx Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla.

Beal earned his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from Texas Tech and his master’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Tennessee. He is an active member of CoSIDA, the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s of America and the Christian Sports Media Association.

Q: Major activities you were involved in as a student at Texas Tech.
A: Student Government, Student Alumni Board, Created Arbor Day As My Senior Project (still going strong), PRSSA, Mass Comm Week, Homecoming Coordinator, part of the group that designed the Official Texas Tech Ring.

Q: What is one of your fondest memories from your Texas Tech days?
A: Sitting in the University Center at lunch surrounded by good friends...Zach Thomas’ interception that beat Texas A&M in 1995...First Big 12 game at Kansas State in ‘96....Darvin Ham breaking the backboard against North Carolina and making Sports Illustrated cover...First Arbor Day...Getting My Official Texas Tech Ring. 

Q: What would you like to see implemented, changed or improved at Texas Tech?
A: Would really like to see the College of Mass Communications continue to grow and improve its reputation around the nation.

A:  To Kill A Mockingbird

A:  Reliability

Q: If you could ask five or six people to your home for an evening, who would they be?

A: President Bush, Anderson Cooper, George Strait, Joe Torre (although I hate the Yankees), Michael Jordan
