Programming Opportunities

3 Rivers Ranch (3RR) has been an asset to Foard County and the surrounding region for years, and the TTU System looks forward to continuing this legacy and building that relationship. From astronomy and agriculture to community outreach, 3RR offers a tremendous amount of collaborative opportunities for each of our five universities: Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Angelo State University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso and Midwestern State University.

The TTU System is committed to being a community partner, and we are excited to highlight the great work already happening on the property and share future opportunities.

Activites:

Star Parties:

The 3 Rivers Ranch will host public star parties sponsored by the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Texas Tech University, the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas Tech University and the Department of Physics & Geosciences at Angelo State University. Telescope viewing is offered at the star parties, along with staff who will assist the public in understanding what they are viewing from the telescopes and how to do astronomy. There will also be public-level science discussions from both TTU and ASU astronomers about modern research in astronomy. We are exploring future opportunites for similar departments at MSU Texas.

These events thus present opportunities both for introductions to stargazing for newcomers and for interactions with seasoned experts for people looking to grow their skills. These events are free to the public, with opportunities to stay overnight on site for a fee, depending on the type of accommodations.

Texas Master Naturalists:

Texas Master Naturalists, Rolling Plains Division comes out to the property once a month to test the Beaver Pond, monitor the pollinator garden, study the horned lizard population and change game cameras.

TTU Davis College of Agriculture Sciences & Natural Resources:

A group of students taking a summer course in the Department of Natural Resource Management had a came to the property for plant identification.

TTU College of Arts & Sciences:

Professor Tom Maccarone and students from the Department of Astronomy and Physics are in the process of building a radio telescope array.
